Mini Pig Diet & Nutrition
There are few things more important than a mini pig’s diet and exercise. Mini pigs need a complete diet of mini pig designed pellets. There are several brands easily available online via Chewy or Amazon. Walmart, Tractor Supply, and local farm and feed stores carry a variety of brands in store.
The best guide to feeding your mini pig is to watch their body as it grows and changes. The AMPA body conditioning guide is a good reference. Be sure to observe your pig’s entire body.
Manufacturer feeding guidelines are 1-2% of body weight. This amount should be adjusted up or down to meet your pig’s specific needs. Watching your pig’s body overall body shape will help you learn if they need more to support growth or less to prevent becoming overfed and overweight.
You should use an actual measuring cup when you feed your mini pig for consistency of amount to prevent over or underfeeding.
Mini pigs are ALWAYS acting hungry. Around the age of 9-12 weeks, they really begin to get comfortable in their new environment. They start getting loud and a little bored and bossy. Many owners mistake this for hunger. If you remember nothing from this article, remember this tip!! NEVER feed a loud pig. Ignore, distract, redirect attention.
Encouraging your pig to move at mealtime and for snacks can be a great way to defeat boredom while giving your pig some required exercise and enrichment. Use treat dispensing toys, puzzles, root rugs, rooting balls, or scatter meals.
Your pig will also learn to love an assortment of healthy vegetables and dark leafy greens. These make great snacks or mid day meals between pellet feedings.
